Dainik Bhaskar group chairman Ramesh Chandra Agarwal passes away

A host of luminaries including Dr Subhash Chandra and PM Modi condoled his passing.

Dainik Bhaskar group chairman Ramesh Chandra Agarwal passed away on Wednesday. He was 73 years old and suffered a heart attack at the Ahmedabad Airport at 11 am on Wednesday. He was rushed to the hospital immediately but could not be resuscitated. He had gone to Delhi from Bhopal on Tuesday and had reached Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning. He suffered heart attack while stepping down from the airplane. His last rites will be performed at 10 am at Bhadbhada Ghat in Bhopal on Thursday. 

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief ministers of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab as well as several prominent personalities of political and business world expressed their condolences on his sudden demise.  Offering his condolences, Essel Group chairman Dr Subhash Chandra tweeted: “The demise of Shri Ramesh Chandra Agarwal is a personal loss for me. In this hour of grief, we stand united with his family.”

 

He was born on November 30, 1944 in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. He pursued studies up to higher secondary in Jhansi where his father Seth Dwarka Prasad Agarwal dealt in books. In 1956, he came to Bhopal with his father. He earned a degree in political science from Bhopal University. He was also awarded Rajiv Gandhi Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. India Today included him in the list of top 50 most powerful persons in 2003, 2006 and 2007. 

 In 2012, Forbes included him in the 95th position on the list of richest persons of India. It was under his leadership that the group launched Dainik Bhaskar in Hindi, Divya Bhaskar in Gujarati, DNA and DB Post in English, Divya Marathi, radio channel MyFM and DB Digital. 

He is survived by his sons Sudhir Agarwal, Girish Agarwal, Pawan Agarwal and daughter Bhawna Agarwal. 

 History of Dainik Bhaskar

He made Dainik Bhaskar (started 59 years ago) the world’s 4th largest circulated newspaper. In 1958, Dainik Bhaskar newspaper was started in Bhopal. Later in 1983, the Indore edition was launched. It was in 1996 that Dainik Bhaskar stepped outside MP’s borders and entered Rajasthan. It was his vision and aim that made Dainik Bhaskar, with 62 editions in 14 states, not only India’s number one newspaper but also world’s 4th largest circulated newspaper.
