Bisada village of Uttar Pradesh's Dadri region continued to reel under tension on Wednesday after Ravi Sisodia, a resident of the village who was arrested on charges of lynching Mohamad Akhlaq in September last year, died at a city hospital in Delhi.

Villagers in Bisada, including Ravi's kin, took out a protest in the area accusing foul play in Ravi's death and demanded resignation of senior jail officials. Angry protesters alleged that Ravi dies due to injuries inflicted on him and held demonstrations prompting authorities in Dadri to bring in police reinforcements and deploy them in the area. Villagers of Bisada claimed that Ravi died due to injuries inflicted on him by police following a fight that took place between him and other inmates of Kasna jail.

While the situation was calmer in the evening, authorities here anticipate trouble when Ravi's body will be brought to his village following an autopsy that was conducted on him at LNJP hospital of Delhi.

"We have been telling police that Ravi was sick but they refused to hear us. Ravi was beaten up by some fellow prisoners due to which he sustained a kidney damage," said deceased's father Ranbeer Sisodia. The accusation was vehemently denied by the police. "The alleged fight took place between another accused and some other inmates. The deceased was not keeping well and we had shifted him to a local hospital, " said a senior police official.

On Monday, Ravi allegedly complained of respiratory problems and fever after which he was admitted to the Noida district hospital. On Tuesday morning, he was shifted to the LNJP Hospital, where he died in the evening.

Meanwhile, Ram Saran Sagar, defence counsel for four of the 18 accused, produced a prayer that was filed on September 30. The prayer requested for Ravi's transfer from prison's health ward to a local hospital, as Ravi had been suffering from chikungunya. The prayer also cites constant pains in Ravi's spine. The autopsy report is yet to be finalised and sent to cops in Noida, sources said.

Why he was jailed

Ravi was among the 18 people who have been charged with the murder of Mohamad Akhlaq in September 2015. The mob suspected Akhlaq of slaughtering a cow and eating the meat with his family members. Akhlaq and his family was attacked by a violent mob, allegedly led by son and nephew of a local BJP leader Sanjay Rana.
