RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said more than any legislation, "awareness in society" can put an end to cow slaughter. "A legislation banning cow slaughter will not suffice... only awareness in the society can ensure an end to the practice," he said.

Bhagwat was asked as to whether cow slaughter could be stopped by enacting a law. His comments came against the backdrop of the outrage and public outcry over the Dadri incident in which a person was killed on suspicion of storing and eating beef.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Chief said if society is organised the country will be strong...and if the country is strong, there will be peace in the world. "By changing law and order system, there will not be a major change in the society. To usher in significant changes in the society, good examples have to be set," he said.

To ensure India carves a niche in the world, RSS workers should work with dedication, devotion and discipline, he added.
