All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for remaining silent on the Dadri issue.

Owaisi, who met the family of the victim Akhlaq and said that PM Modi tweeted condolence on sad demise of Asha Bhonsle ji's son, but people hoped he would also tweet on Dadri. However, he did not. He further added. "The incident was not an accident. This was a pre-planned murder."

A day ago, Owaisi had attacked Samajwadi Party government for being a "mute spectator" to the incident of lynching of a man in Uttar Pradesh over rumours of his family having eaten beef. "Is our democracy going to become a banana republic? Can they kill a person? Then why is there law or court or police?" Owaisi had questioned.

A 50-year-old man was beaten to death and his son seriously injured by a mob which barged into their house in Dadri, UP on Monday night following rumours that the family had consumed beef. Cow slaughter is banned in Uttar Pradesh. Akhlaq's son Sartaj, who serves in the Indian Air Force has demanded punishment to the guilty.

"Those arrested murdered my father. I want to know the reason for which they did this to him. They should be punished so that none from the village would dare to do such a deed in future," he said, adding that his family was contemplating moving out of the village as such incidents could happen any time. Recalling the incident,  Akhlaq's wife said,"There was a lot of noise and they were banging our doors and abusing us. The entered the house by jumping a wall from the other side. Then they started misbehaving and vandalising things after which they mercilessly thrashed us."

Courting controversy, Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma on Thursday described the lynching of a 50-year-old man in Dadri by a mob, allegedly over consumption of beef, as an "accident" and said that no "communal colour" should be given to it, even as the family of the victim is planning to move out of the village fearing that it may happen again.

The FIR lodged in this connection has no mention of beef. Police claimed that the cow slaughtering was just an allegation by the assailants. "FIR has been lodged under IPC section 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 302(murder), 307 (Attempt to murder), 458(house-trespass or house-breaking), 504 ( Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace)," an officer said.
