Accused Ravi, who died of kidney and respiratory failure at the hospital on Tuesday, was assaulted in jail, alleged his family.
The family of a Dadri lynching case accused, who died at a hospital in Delhi, on Wednesday alleged he was assaulted in jail even as a magisterial inquiry was ordered into the death that has triggered tension in Bishada village in Uttar Pradesh.
22-year-old Ravi alias Robin died at Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital in Delhi on Tuesday of kidney and respiratory failure, hospital authorities said. Uttar Pradesh Police claimed that Ravi was suffering from high fever and his death was suspected to be due to dengue.
Ravi's brother Vicky, however, claimed he was "assaulted by police in jail due to which he sustained injuries. Unlike, what police is saying, he was not suffering from any fever. We want to know the truth and we want justice. And, once we received the body, we will take it it to our village in Bishada, where several other villagers are waiting anxiously." Vicky and Ravi's father are in Delhi awaiting the handing over the body from the police authorities.
"About 20-30 villagers also have come to the hospital after they heard of the case," he said.
Meanwhile, the postmortem was conducted today under the supervision of a Metropolitan Magistrate from a local Delhi court, "as it is a case of judicial custody death". "We have facilitated the postmortem of the deceased. There were 10-15 members of Hindustan Sena (right-wing group) who had gathered at the hospital in the day. We rushed in a force and provided adequate security at the hospital premises," a senior Delhi Police official said.
Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate N P Singh ordered an inquiry into the death, even as situation grew tense in Bishada, where villagers held protest and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and shouted slogans against the state government. National Human Rights Commission, meanwhile, issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government seeking a report within four weeks.
In a statement, the Commission observed that "the reported different versions and opinions of the jail and the hospital authorities, and the suspicion raised by the family members of the deceased prisoner indicate that the matter requires a thorough probe to determine the facts, which led to his death."
In Dadri's Bishada, Mohammed Akhlaq was dragged out of his house and killed by a mob in September last year on suspicion of eating beef, triggering communal tension in the region.
