The DMK on Tuesday urged Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to find out the exact number of Kanyakumari fishermen who went missing after cyclone Ockhi hit the southern tip of the country last week.

In a letter to the minister, DMK working president MK Stalin said that there were conflicting reports about the number — from 96 to 2,570. "I, therefore, request you to kindly use all means at your command to find out the exact number of missing fishermen. Women in the fishing community say more than 1,000 people are missing. Their cries cannot be ignored," he
said.

He expressed his disappointment that both the state government and the central government had only speculated figures on missing fishermen and no correct or reliable information was available despite the review meeting by the Chief Minister.
