Severe cyclonic storm Hudhud, with wind speeds of 170-180 kmph, made landfall on India's eastern coast in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, triggering heavy rains that left five people dead in the coastal states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
Normal life was thrown completely out of gear as winds with a speed of 170 to 180 kmph battered Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts. The very severe cyclonic storm made landfall in Visakhapatnam before noon. The gale, accompanied by heavy downpour, resulted in trees being uprooted and roofs of thatched huts and sheds being swept away. The latest update is that cyclone is blowing at 80-90 kmph. Chandrababu Naidu has requested for the cyclone to be declared as 'national calamity'.

Vizag airport likely to resume partial operation on October 18
Operations at the city airport, badly affected by cyclone 'Hudhud' which struck on Sunday, is expected to be partially restored on October 18, officials said today. Devastating Cyclone Hudhud caused damage worth thousands of crores in the port city and other storm-hit areas of the coast, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said on Tuesday.Eastern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited alone is estimated to have suffered a loss of Rs 40,000 crore, which includes damage to substations, high-tension transmission lines, poles and disruption in distribution network. About 16,000 electric poles were knocked down by cyclone fury that also left around 6,000 transformers damaged. Damages to Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Vizag steel plant) were estimated at Rs 1,000 crore, Indian Navy Rs 2,000 crore, Andhra University Rs 300 crore and Vizag airport Rs 500 crore, Naidu said. Vizag hit by shortage of essential commodities after cyclone
After the devastation caused by Cyclone Hudhud, the port city has been hit by shortage of essential commodities with people scrambling for milk, drinking water, vegetables and petrol even as power supply is yet to be restored. Some residents complained that they are not getting drinking water and milk. Serpentine queues were seen at petrol stations, where people have milled around for refill. A resident pleaded with folded hands: "For people of Visakhapatnam, please give drinking water and other essential commodities. I have not seen such a worst situation in my life." Read more
PM Narendra Modi and CM Naveen Patnaik to make aerial survey of cyclone-hit Odisha
Two days after cyclone Hudhud hit the coast near Visakhapatnam, relief and restoration work was today intensified in Odisha even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik were slated to conduct aerial surveys of calamity-hit parts of the state. Modi, who is scheduled to visit Visakhapatnam for a first hand assessment of the situation in Andhra Pradesh, is also slated to make an aerial survey over southern Odisha districts hit by the cyclone. Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Visakhapatnam Tuesday to review the situation in the aftermath of cyclone Hudhud that has claimed 21 lives and left a trail of destruction in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The Prime Minister would visit Visakhapatnam and undertake an aerial survey of the city in the afternoon, according to Parakala Prabhakar, Advisor (Communications) to the Andhra Pradesh government. Andhra Pradesh power utilities are putting efforts to restore power supply which was disrupted due to the devastation caused by cyclonic storm Hudhud in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts. Energy Secretary Ajay Jain, continuously reviewing the cyclone relief works with regard to power sector, said the cyclone, gale and wind gushing at around 200 kmph caused severe faults which in turn damaged the sub-station equipment, poles, transformers apart from the transmission and distribution lines in affected areas on the state coastline. Karnataka to help Andhra Pradesh restore power supply in cyclone hit areas
Karnataka government has agreed to provide man power assistance to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to restore electricity supply in cyclone Hudhud hit parts of that state. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu spoke to his counterpart in Karnataka Siddaramaiah and sought the state's assistance to restore normalcy in coastal Andhra Pradesh that bore the brunt of the cyclone yesterday, an official release said. Cyclone Hudhud: Andhra Pradesh government begins relief operation
A day after Cyclone Hudhud devastated Visakhapatnam and other nearby districts, the state government on Monday embarked on the gigantic task of restoring normalcy in the battered port city and providing access to affected villages. Under the impact of Hudhud, that unleashed gusty winds and heavy rains, the picturesque port city of Visakhapatnam looked like a war-ravaged zone with uprooted trees, knocked down cell towers, transformers and telephone poles seen at several places. Cyclone Hudhud: 558 people evacuated by NDRF
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Sunday evacuated around 558 people after Cyclone Hudhud made its landfall in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Sunday. A dead body of a one year old child was also recovered from the debris. In order to resume the operation of aircrafts, work of runway clearance at Vizag airport is underway at the Navy airport- INS Dega, according to a navy statement. Read more

The South Central Railway on Monday cancelled four trains and diverted three others in view of the prevailing weather conditions and heavy rains over north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. As cyclone Hudhud weakened and moved to Chhattisgarh, Odisha Government today braced for relief and rehabilitation in the affected southern districts where its damaged houses and uprooted trees even as heavy rainfall was expected to lash these areas. While three persons died in Odisha due to the very severe cyclonic storm that made a landfall near Visakhapatnam in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, damage caused by the calamity would be assessed soon, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Mohapatra said. As a precautionary measure, around 2.33 lakh people had been evacuated from vulnerable areas to safe places in ten districts in view of Hudhud though the intensity of the cyclone was not very fierce, he said. Cyclone Hudhud pounded the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with heavy rain and winds of almost 200 kmph today leaving eight people dead and a trail of devastation with Vishakapatnam, where the very severe storm made landfall, bearing the brunt.
A little over four lakh people- about 250,000 in four districts of AP and 156,000 in nine districts of Odisha were evacuated to relief camps and more will be shifted to safer places depending upon water levels, officials said. Chandrababu Naidu requests Centre to term Hudhud as 'national calamity'
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday requested the Central government to declare Cyclone Hudhud as a 'national calamity' and said that the Central government was working closely with the state authorities to contain the damage even as, earlier in the day, the storm made its landfall at Vishakhapatnam. "It is a very severe cyclone. Just now, the eye of the cyclone has crossed on to the land and the rest of the cyclone will take around three to four hours to cross on to land. I request the Centre to declare this as a national calamity," Naidu said, addressing the media at the Andhra Pradesh State Development Planning Society (APSDPS) here.
Talking about the role that the Centre had taken, Naidu also said that he had spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had given his assurance of all available assistance to help contain the damage by the storm. "The situation is very serious in three or four districts. We are making all arrangements. Already, the Centre has helped us. I just spoke to the Prime Minister, who said that he will do what all is possible. They have also mobilised NDRF troops, boats and helicopters. 67,752 people evacuated so far in Odisha, says CM Naveen Patnaik
Asserting that the administration was closely monitoring the situation and bracing for the aftereffects of Cyclone Hudhud in Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday said that an estimated 67,752 people have been evacuated so far from various districts and brought to safe locations. "All preparations have been made in the districts to counter the effects of the cyclone and the heavy rainfall that will follow the cyclone. As per the latest information received, 67,752 people have been evacuated in Gajapati Ganjam, Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Puri, Kendrapara and Khurda districts to 604 safe shelters," Patnaik said. Met department forecasts more damage in Visakhapatnam
The Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), LS Rathore, on Sunday said that even as Cyclone Hudhud crosses over Visakhapatnam, it will experience very heavy rain thereby causing damage in the city. "The severe cyclonic storm Hudhud is just crossing over the city of Visakhapatnam. So far, the maximum sustain wind which has been reported is ranging between 170-180 kmph gusting up to 190 kmph. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is being reported along the coast," said Rathore. Read more
Earlier in the day, in Delhi, IMD Director Laxman Singh Rathore said the centre of cyclone was crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast and wind speed was 170-180 kmph gusting up to 195 kmph. He said the wind speed will come down by 50% in the next six hours. The average sea wave surge was 1.5 metres and will vary from one to two metres in places as the cyclone crosses Vizag.
"The PMO is monitoring the situation arising out of the cyclone on an hourly basis," he said, adding that helicopters will operate for relief and rescue measures in the Andhra coast region only tomorrow morning after slow-down of wind speed.
The authorities have evacuated 90,013 people across the four districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhaptnam and East Godavari. The Andhra Pradesh government has identified 356 villages in 59 mandals of the four districts as cyclone-prone. More than 300 relief camps have been opened.
Army columns are positioned at Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam with power boats and other equipment for rescue and relief. Six helicopters have been positioned in the Naval base at Visakhapatnam. The Indian Air Force has tasked Headquarters Training Command, Bangalore to be the nodal agency for all relief operations in connection with severe cyclone Hudhud.

The IMD has rated Hudhud as a very severe cyclonic storm that could pack gusts of 195 km/h and dump more than 24.5 cm (10 inches) of rain in some places when it makes landfall.
68,000 evacuated in Odisha as Cyclone Hudhud lands in Andhra Pradesh
As severe cyclonic storm Hudhud made a landfall in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today said about 68,000 people have been evacuated to safe places, the chief minister said, directing the officials to continue the evacuation of people from vulnerable areas as the complete impact of the cyclone would be felt some hours after the landfall. 2 killed in rain-related incidents in coastal Andhra Pradesh
Two people were killed in separate rain-related incidents in Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh today as the very severe cyclonic storm Hudhud triggered heavy downpour in the region. One person was killed when the compound wall of a building collapsed in Visakhaptnam district. Another person died in Srikakulam district when a tree collapsed following pounding rains, according to state disaster management department. Read more

Cyclone Hudhud reaches peak strength, pounds India's eastern coast
Cyclone Hudhud, packing gusts of up to 195 kilometers an hour (over 120 mph), reached peak strength and caused extensive damage to India's eastern coast on Sunday morning. It was expected to hit the coast with full force around noon local time. In and around Visakhapatnam, or Vizag, which is home to a major naval base, strengthening winds were already causing extensive damage and knocking out power supplies. "Hundreds of trees have been uprooted and power lines knocked down," K Hymavathi, the special commissioner for disaster management for Andhra Pradesh, told Reuters by telephone.
Streets in Vizag that had been bustling on Saturday were deserted as shrill, roaring winds lashed the city, smashing windows and damaging buildings. With power out, many people had to resort to back-up generators. Vizag port suspended operations on Saturday night, with the head of the port saying that 17 ships which had been in the harbour were moving offshore where they would be less at risk from high seas.

PM Narendra Modi holds emergency meeting to review preparedness for cyclone Hudhud
In an emergency high-level meeting to review preparedness for cyclone Hudhud, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today asked officials to ensure that rescue and relief operations proceed smoothly and people are informed about the cyclone on a real-time basis.
Modi also asked Home Minister Rajnath Singh to be in touch with the Chief Ministers of the states likely to be affected by it, an official statement said. "He instructed senior officers of the union government to maintain close contact and coordination with officers of the affected states to ensure that relief and rescue operations proceed smoothly. He said suitable arrangements should be made to inform people about the cyclone on a real-time basis," it said. The meeting was attended by the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the PM, the Home Secretary, the Defence Secretary and other senior officials from the Indian Meteorological Department and and the PMO. Tens of thousands of people from low-lying areas of coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh have been evacuated as the state intensified preparations to face Cyclone Hudhud, expected to reach the northern coastline around Visakhapatnam by forenoon tomorrow. Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, East Coast Railway has decided to cancel the services of 38 trains on October 12 when cyclone 'Hudhud' is expected to hit Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. "We do not want even a single casualty as our passengers safety is foremost in our agenda.
