Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee's niece, Debapriya Chatterjee, took to Twitter to vent her fury after reports of her alleged traffic law violation and hitting a pedestrian hit the headlines.

While she had earlier strongly expressed her dissent for being referred to as the ‘mayor’s niece’, on Tuesday, she openly referred to her family connection.

In a reply to a tweet that attacked her, she wrote, “Ask your uncle to be the mayor. What else can I say?” In another reply to a tweet she wrote, “I’m the elite and the privileged, remember?”

However her controversial comments received a swift backlash on social media.

A day earlier, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had termed Chatterjee as a ‘little girl’ and claimed that the constable could not take away her licence for breaking the law. Banerjee drew a lot of flak from the opposition parties after she made this statement at the West Bengal assembly.

On May 24, Chatterjee, allegedly jumped a traffic signal twice and assaulted and abused traffic personnel after the constable Chandan Pandey reported against her traffic law violation. Pandey, later filed a complaint against her for stopping him from discharging his duties. Chatterjee, later filed a counter complaint against the traffic personnel alleging that he verbally abused her.

Denying the allegations, Chatterjee had said, “There is no evidence that I was driving the car under the influence of alcohol. Neither did I hit any pedestrian. It is a trap to frame me.”

Even though, Chatterjee and four other friends have been booked for a non-bailable offence, no arrests have been made as yet.
