Jammu and Kashmir government on Sunday imposed a curfew in several parts of the region ahead of Muharram processions.

"Today is the last day of Muharram; Government has imposed a curfew without any notification. When I reached Ram Bagh in the morning, I got to know about it. I had to walk a lot and face many difficulties. People who had to go to hospitals were carrying permit letters but even they were not allowed to go. They should have announced the curfew beforehand," said a resident Owais Wani.

Security personnel manned the streets in main city of Srinagar to prevent any mishap.

Since 1989, Muharram processions have been disallowed in Srinagar after a pro-independence revolt started in Kashmir.

Only small mourning rallies and processions are allowed in selected areas with limited Shi'ite populations.
