1 CRPF jawan martyred in Srinagar camp attack; gun battle still on

The CRPF thwarted a possible terror strike at its battalion headquarters and cornered the gunmen in a private building near Karan Nagar in the summer capital city of Srinagar. A CRPF trooper has been injured in the gunbattle.

The CRPF thwarted a possible terror strike at its battalion headquarters and cornered the gunmen in a private building near Karan Nagar in the summer capital city of Srinagar. A CRPF jawan who was seriously injured in gunfight during ongoing encounter has succumbed to injuries.​ 

"Gun fight is on. The militants have been cornered in a private building. Presently the encounter is on," Ravideep Sahi, Inspector General of CRPF, told DNA. 

This follows the cordon and search operation launched by the troops to track down the attackers who were trying to approach the 23rd battalion of CRPF early morning. 

The incident occurred at 4.30 am when alert sentry deployed in the observation post of 23rd battalion of CRPF saw two militants armed with AK 47 riffles approaching towards the camp

Sentry immediately opened fire prompting the militants to beat a retreat. Massive searches were launched to nab the militants 

"They tried to enter the headquarters early hours which was foiled. During the cordon and search operation, we have got exchange of fire with the militants. They are trapped", said Sahi. 

Sources said during the search operation, gunmen took refuge in a private building. When troops were moving in, they were fired at. Immediately the building was surrounded and operation to flush them out launched. 

"One of our boys of 49th battalion has suffered injuries in the incident", said Rajesh Yadav, CRPF spokesman at Srinagar. 

The incident occurred just two days after Jaish e Mohammad fidayeens stormed the highly fortified 36 Brigade headquarters of Army at Sunjuwan in Jammu. Five soldiers and father of one trooper was killed and 10 others injured in the attack. Three fidayeens were also neutralised.
