Displaying exemplary bravery, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel foiled an attempt by terrorists to rob a bank in south Kashmir's Anantnag district. Security personnel deployed there tried to apprehend the militants, but they opened fire, a police officer said.

He said a CRPF head constable sustained a bullet injury.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when two people, one of them armed with a pistol, entered the branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank on the Tehsil office premises in Lal Chowk area of Anantnag town and fired at the CRPF guard on duty in order to snatch his weapon and loot the bank.

The robber who was overpowered by the personnel has been identified as Muneer Ahmad Mulla. "One of the robbers managed to escape after security personnel overpowered them. Malla was apprehended," said Rajesh Yadav, CRPF Spokesperson in Srinagar.

A resident of Yaripora in Kulgam district, Malla runs a readymade garment shop in his village. The injured CRPF personnel has been identified as Havaldar Kushal Kumar of the 40 battalion of CRPF.

"We are waiting for confirmation whether he (Mulla) was new recruit," said Yadav.

During the interrogation, Malla told police that he was "forced to come along with the other militant", who he identified as Raja. "I met him four days ago when he approached me to accompany him for the heist," he said.

Sources said the youth is allegedly an over-ground worker of separatist group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

"He is still being interrogated. We are on the lookout for the second terrorist who fled," said Yadav.
