Forget use of pellet guns, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has embarked on a new journey to win the hearts and minds of the people in Kashmir valley.

The CRPF has set up a 24/7 helpline to lend a helping hand to the people in distress. From assistance in combating eve-teasing to providing ambulance services, CRPF is doing its best to win the trust of the Kashmiri people which was broken during the summer unrest of 2016.

"This helpline is an outreach programme to extend support and help to people in need. CRPF deployment has been done throughout Jammu and Kashmir. If people contact us on the toll free number, the nearby unit or company can be rushed to help those in distress," Rajesh Yadav, CRPF spokesman for Kashmir, told DNA.

CRPF has also gone on a publicity blitzkrieg and released a video projecting the humane face of the force and highlighting their endeavours to reach out to people in jeopardy.

"CRPF can extend direct help to the people whether it is ambulance services, medical help or any other help. Indirectly, we can also provide assistance and help. For example, if the person is helpless or hesitant to go to the police, we can chip in and take up the matter with the concerned police station," said Yadav.

There are around 47 battalions of CRPF deployed in the Kashmir valley of which around 25 are posted in Srinagar. CRPF performs a dual role of managing law and order, and fighting militants in the strife torn Jammu and Kashmir.

The helpline has been set up against the backdrop of five months of unrest that has created a wedge between the CRPF and the locals. Particularly the use of pellet guns has created bad-blood between the local people and the CRPF.
