Cracking down on use of soap and oils in the bathing area of famous Courtallam water falls near here in Tuticorin District, authorities have slapped fine on more than 170 people in the past fortnight.
Complying with a Madras High Court order which banned use of soap, oils and shampoos, officials of the local panchayat took action against 178 people and collected a fine of Rs 100 each from them during the drive from December 5 to 18, officials said on Saturday.
Passing orders on a PIL, the court in July last had observed that the falls was not being maintained in tune with its historical fame and glory and directed officials to ensure that the prohibited items were not carried to bathing area.
