Amid reports of a Hindutva outfit issuing life threats to JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and his college mate Umar Khalid, CPI on Friday urged Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma to take necessary action to ensure their safety.

In a letter to Verma, CPI's Delhi unit claimed it had on March 29 filed a complaint with the SHO Vasant Kunj in this regard. "We are surprised to note that SHO, Vasant Kunj, Virendra Singh claims he has not received any complaint on the subject mentioned above. We once again request you to take all necessary action," Delhi CPI Secretary Dhirendra Sharma said in the letter.

President of Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena, Amit Jani, had reportedly threatened to enter JNU and "gun down" Kumar and Khalid if they did not to leave Delhi by March 31 after the JNUSU president claimed that some army personnel raped women in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a Women's Day march here last month, Kumar had said he will raise voice against AFSPA and human rights violations. "No matter how much you try to stop us, we will speak up against human rights violations. We will raise our voice against AFSPA. While we have a lot of respect for our soldiers, we will still talk about the fact that in Kashmir women are raped by security personnel," Kumar had said.
