The Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Sulkhan Singh has issued an order to invoke the National Security Act (NSA) and Gangsters Act against those found indulging in the slaughter and trafficking of cows across Uttar Pradesh.

After holding a review meeting of Zonal ADGs on Monday to review the law and order situation in the state, Singh said that "it was high time to take the strictest action against those caught slaughtering and smuggling cows within UP and across states as such incidents create communal strife and vitiate peace".

"Invoke NSA or Gangsters Act against anyone indulging in such activities," he directed senior police officials and all the district police chiefs, telling them to go all-out against offenders. The DGP passed this order in view of a May 23 notification of the Narendra Modi-led government, which banned the sale of cows from open markets.

Since the slaughter and transportation of cows are already banned under Sections 3 and 5-A of the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955, Singh issued a fresh order invoking NSA and Gangster Act for effective implementation of the Centre's May 23 notification and the state government's crackdown on illegal abattoirs.

DGP's office spokesperson Rahul Srivatstava told DNA that provisions of NSA and Gangsters Act were invoked in the past as well against those found guilty of slaughtering or smuggling cows. "The DGP has renewed the earlier order passed during past regimes," he clarified.
