COVID-19: India achieves record 10 lakh tests per day

India on Saturday crossed a record achievement of 10 lakh samples tested for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) amid the raging pandemic outbreak. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in the last 24 hours, 10,23,836 sample tests were conducted in India.

India on Saturday crossed a record achievement of 10 lakh samples tested for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) amid the raging pandemic outbreak. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in the last 24 hours, 10,23,836 sample tests were conducted in India.

In the last five days, India has conducted an average of 8,89,935 tests per day. A total number of 3,40,91,730 samples have been tested for COVID-19 so far in India.

On average, 75 people are being tested daily on an average population of one lakh, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, which mention that at least 14 people per one lakh population need to be tested daily.

In India, the number of coronavirus test labs have now gone up to 1,511, out of which 983 are government and 528 are private labs.


 

"Ramping up of testing facility across India was at the core of increasing testing per day. Through our ardent efforts, it was ensured that a specific testing platform is made available addressing general testing (RT-PCR), High-throughput testing (COBAS), testing at remotest places and PHCs (TrueNAT, CBNAAT), in containment areas (rapid antigen testing) and for large number & migrant population testing (pooled sample testing)," mentioned a press release by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Notably, India now has a strong network of 1511 labs comprising 983 labs in the government sector and 528 private labs. 

These include:

• Real-Time RT PCR based testing labs: 778 (Govt: 458 + Private: 320)

• TrueNat based testing labs: 615 (Govt: 491 + Private: 124)

• CBNAAT based testing labs: 118 (Govt: 34 + Private: 84)
