Courtesy call or 2019 calling? PM Narendra Modi meets DMK chief Karunanidhi in Chennai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met DMK chief Karunanidhi in Chennai. Modi is in this city today to attend the platinum jubilee function of Tamil newspaper Dina Thanthi. Modi met Karunanidhi at his Gopalpuram residence and was received by DMK working president MK Stalin. Modi's brief interaction with Karunanidhi has set speculations in political circles. Many see it as a step towards a possible BJP-DMK alliance ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections. 

The meeting between the two leaders lasted about 20 minutes. Modi sat next to Karunanidhi and held his hands.

 

Actor Kamal Haasan is likely to make "important political statement" on November 7. This meeting a before Kamal Haasan charts out his future political strategy, and the ongoing power tussle within the AIADMK, give rise to speculation that BJP is juggling with its options before general elections in 2019. 

Although it has been termed a courtesy call by both the parties as the former CM DMK chief Karunanidhi is not keeping well.

Chennai is reeling under the impact of heavy rains. Modi assured the people of Tamil Nadu that the Centre would provide assistance to the state so that it is able to cope with relief and rescue operations following the floods in Tamil Nadu.

Modi was accompanied by Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan and state BJP chief Tamilisai Soundararajan.DMK leaders including Kanimozhi, who is the daughter of Karunanidhi, were also present.

Later, the wheelchair-bound Karunanidhi made a brief appearance outside and waved at his supporters who cheered him.Karunanidhi, who was taken ill in October 2016 due to a drug-induced allergy, was twice admitted to a private hospital in December last.
Karunanidhi has been since confined to his house, but made one rare appearance on October 19 this year when he visited an exhibition here held to showcase the 75-year journey of DMK's mouthpiece, 'Murasoli'
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had called on the nonagenarian DMK patriarch at his residence in December, 2016.

The Prime Minister was in the city to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Daily Tanthi, a local media company.
