Coronavirus: Government orders postponement of university exams till March 31

The directions have been issued to ensure safety of students, teachers and parents as well as maintenance of the academic calender.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development has directed all autonomous organisation under it including UGC, AICTE, NTA, NIOS, CBSE, and NCTE to postpone all examinations till March 31 as a precautionary measure to contain to spread of coronavirus.

The directions have been issued to ensure safety of students, teachers and parents as well as maintenance of the academic calender.

"I appeal to all students, teachers and parents not to panic," Union Cabinet Minister for Human Resource Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank tweeted.

According to an official statement fron the ministry, the following precautionary measures are further required to be taken by all educational institutions and examination boards under the Ministry of HRD.

1. All ongoing examinations may be rescheduled after 31st March 2020. This would include CBSE, NIOS and also University examinations.

2. All evaluation work may be rescheduled after 31st March, this would include evaluation work of CBSE, NIOS as also University exams.

3. Since JEE mains may require travel by examinees to different towns and the dates may clash with rescheduled CBSE and other board exams therefore, JEE mains should be rescheduled and new date of JEE mains will be announced on 31st March after reassessment of situation

The ministry has further asked all educational institutions and examination boards to maintain regular communication with the students and teachers through electronic means and keep them fully informed so that there is no anxiety amongst the students, teacher and parents.

They have also been asked to notify helpline numbers/emails which student can access for their queries.

Meanwhile, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday postponed ongoing board examinations of class 10, 12 till March 31 in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

"All ongoing CBSE examinations in India and abroad postponed till March 31 and will be rescheduled thereafter... After an assessment of the situation," CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi said in a press release.

"All ongoing evaluation work will be suspended during the period," he added.

The announcement came following a Ministry of Human Resource Development order that directed the CBSE and all educational institutions in the country to postpone exams till March 31 in view of the COVID-19 scare.
