Noted social worker Medha Patkar was detained on Sunday for protesting against land acquisition for the Pench water diversion project, the police said.
She was detained at the railway station when she insisted on proceeding to the venue of the protest, being organised by the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti (KSS).
Meanwhile, KSS activists began a satyagraha protesting against land acquisition for the project.
The police also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Chhindwara, Amarwada and Chourai towns as a precautionary measure.
Yesterday, KSS leader advocate Aradhana Bhargava was also arrested by the police in view of the protest.
The situation is tense, but under control, police added.
