An Assistant Police Inspector (API) of a local crime branch unit of the Vasai police — who was the investigating officer probing an alleged extortion racket run by a government doctor in cahoots with politicians and former cops — claimed in Vasai court on Tuesday that a transfer order was the 'reward' he got for his efforts in cracking the case.

"This is the reward I got from the Inspector General of the Konkan range for arresting the extortionist," API Prashant Langi told Magistrate YG Dube in the court when, in a dramatic move, he showed the latter his transfer orders.

Langi was allegedly summoned by Prashant Burde, the Inspector General of the Konkan range, to the IG's office on April 14 with files pertaining to the documents of the case, in which Dr Anil Yadav was booked for allegedly demanding extortion money from renowned builders and developers after filing Right To Information queries at government offices. Langi made the station diary entry in the
case before meeting Burde.

When Yadav was produced in the Vasai court after his arrest on Monday, Langi showed his transfer orders, signed by Burde (a copy of which is with DNA), to the magistrate and revealed that he has been pressurised by Burde to not initiate action against Yadav and certain politicians and ex-policemen who are also allegedly involved in the extortion racket.

Langi, said, "My transfer order to the police control room was shocking after we successfully arrested Yadav, who was running the extortion racket."

Burde, however, refuted the allegations that the API has made. "I did not give any out-of-the-way instructions to the officer for a case and we will give the reply if needed to the Palghar police department," he said.
