Constable amongst two killed in Assam heatwave

Assam is going through a severe heatwave over the past few days with temperatures soaring over 40 degrees Celsius in several part of the state. On Friday, two people succumbed to the extreme weather, taking the death toll in the state due to the heatwave to four.

Assam is going through a severe heatwave over the past few days with temperatures soaring over 40 degrees Celsius in several part of the state. On Friday, two people succumbed to the extreme weather, taking the death toll in the state due to the heatwave to four.

 One of the Friday’s victims is a police constable, who died in the state’s Kokrajhar district. Another cop is undergoing treatment in Kokrajhar RNB Civil Hospital.

The deceased police constable has been identified as Badarsingh Narzary. The constable was engaged in Governor’s duty when he suffered from heatstroke. He was immediately rushed to the Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital, however he was declared dead on arrival. Constables accompanying him to the hospital said that he died on his way to the hospital. Governor Jagdish Mukhi was on a three-day visit at Kokrajhar and Dhubri district.

Narzary, a resident of Bagheswari, Bongaigaon in Assam is survived by two daughters.

Another on-duty police official, Lalmohan Barman collapsed after suffering a heatstroke. He was rushed to the Kokrajhar RNB civil hospital where he is presently undergoing treatment.

This apart, an unidentified person died of heatstroke in Sonitpur, Assam.

Several unconfirmed reports say one person each of the Morigaon and Kamrup districts have died amidst the presently prevailing heatwave condition in the state.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Assam will continue to experience uncomfortable temperatures over the next few days.

In another incident, a caged leopard died of heatstroke in the Badlabheta Tea Estate in Assam.  Forest officials managed to cage a leopard that had strayed into the inhabited area. However, before being released into the forest, it died while being transported.
