Congress young generation leaders have come out in support of their vice-president Rahul Gandhi to shield him against the barbs of senior party leaders, many of whom privately and some publicly attribute defeat of the party to the leadership deficiencies of Rahul, who was also a chief poll campaigner.

A group of 16 secretaries met here at an undisclosed place twice during past 24 hours to take on party general secretaries asking them to shoulder blame of the defeat as they were part of every decision making process. If this revolt was not enough, the party over past one week has thrice, distanced itself from the statements of its three senior leaders Digvijay Singh, Janardan Dwivedi and Manish Tewari and snubbed them, for airing views on public forums rather using internal party mediums.

The group of secretaries and some office-bearers of Youth Congress are understood to have written a letter to all general secretaries to desist from blaming Rahul for the party's humiliating loss. They have asked senior leadership to speak in one voice rather creating confusion amongst cadres and voice their opinions and dissent only at party platforms.

The revolt of secretaries is seen unprecedented in the Congress. They have never enjoyed any clout in the party and are seen as lynchpin of respective general secretaries under whom they work. But of late, after Rahul took over they have been given responsibilities independent of their general secretaries and have been allowed to attend meetings to take crucial decisions.

The secretaries have even warned their senior leadership either mend their ways of they will openly demand report card of each one of them and their performance over past 10 years.

The 12 general secretaries along with treasurer Motilal Vora and political secretary Ahmed Patel form the party's high command and the innermost protective ring around Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul.

"There's an attempt to create doubts about Rahul Gandhi's leadership abilities, and one ploy has been to raise the Priyanka bogey. We know the future lies with Rahul but some seniors are more worried about their own future," a secretary, who attended the meeting, said. He said these general secretaries have enjoyed power without any accountability and many of them even don't fetch a vote. "Their blaming Rahul for the defeat doesn't auger well. Instead, they should introspect within," the secretary said.

Sources said Rahul was himself frustrated at some of the seniors' resistance to change. In recent weeks, Rahul has not discouraged any member from any state who has complained to him about "conspiracy" by entrenched forces.
