The Congress wants to reclaim its most prominent Gandhi. To mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, the party has decided to hold the next meeting of its executive body, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) at Sevagram village, which houses Gandhi’s ashram.

The party is planning a series of events during the CWC meet. State party presidents are most likely to not be there. A shraddhanjali meet will be held, with the party’s senior most leaders, including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, paying their respects to the Mahatma.

To mark the occasion, the party will carry out a padyatra -- the Shanti March, where party leaders, including Gandhi, will walk over 5-6 km from Sevagram to Wardha. The day will end with a public meeting at Wardha addressed by Gandhi, where he is expected to draw from Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals.

It has been reported that the trustee of the Gandhi ashram in Sevagram has denied permission for a political event. In that case, Rahul might pay his respects at the Raj Ghat in the morning and then travel to Sevagram.
At the CWC meeting, the party is expected to take up issues for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
