Notwithstanding, finance minister Arun Jaitley ruling out any impact of the controversies kicked up by former IPL boss Lalit Modi on Parliament session, Congress on Thursday said it was not going to let the government go off the hook without getting answers and actions against erring ministers.
"All the lame excuses being rolled out by the finance minister are unacceptable and as the principal opposition party, the Congress Party is not going to allow this government to go scot-free," said PC Chacko, party spokesperson and general secretary. The Congress has threatened to disrupt the 3-week monsoon session of Parliament beginning on July 21 to derail reform agenda of the government.
"The prime minister and the BJP cannot shamelessly brazen out the LalitGate scandal by keeping mum on foreign minister Sushma Swaraj helping a fugitive to get travel documents from Britain, her daughter appearing as a counsel to the betting racketeer and in return get offer to her husband as a director in his company," said Chacko. "Nor can they ignore Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje filing affidavit to assist residency of a money launderer in a foreign country," he affirmed.
Earlier, Jaitley said he hoped the Opposition would be more concerned about the important legislative business than to disrupt Parliament on such issues. He said the Bill to amend the Land Acquisition Act and the Constitution amendment for a new pan-India Goods and Services Tax (GST) from next April are very crucial for development and as such any disruptions would amount to the concerned political party taking anti-growth and anti-development position.
Stopping short of calling any such act as anti-national if the Opposition scuttles the "extremely necessary" business, Jaitley said he does not see any political party adopting a negative approach on the issue of the country's development.
Meanwhile, on Thursday fugitive IPL founder Lalit Modi, also continued his tirade against BJP MP Varun Gandhi who admitted meeting him in London but denied his insinuation that he wanted to broker a deal between Modi and his aunt Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
