Congress on Saturday said it would respect the verdict given by voters in the recently-held Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana whose result will be declared on Sunday. The party also said that it would go with the decision of the people of Jammu and Kashmir who want the Assembly elections to be held as per schedule.

"We believe in democracy and we are ready to accept whatever verdict the voters of these two states have given. Whatever the verdict is we will hold introspection after the results are declared," senior Congress leader and Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Saif-ud-din Soz said in Jammu.

Commenting on the exit polls that predict a majority for BJP in Maharashtra, Soz said, "The situation would have been much different if NCP and Congress would have fought the elections together, but even the BJP and the Shiv Sena had to split before the elections."

While accepting that there were corrupt elements within the party in Maharashtra, Soz said, "The chief minister of Maharashtra is a very honest politician, but yes there can be some corrupt elements within the government there." When asked to comment on the waving of Islamic State (IS) flags in Kashmir, Soz said that media must not pay heed to the acts of "some stupid elements."

"When the media will stop highlighting the act of a few stupid individuals, they will themselves stop waving these flags," he said.
