Releasing a 20-page manifesto just a day before campaigning ends, the Congress in Meghalaya has promised to create 3,00,000 jobs for at least one person per family in the next five years, and a promise to increase the Rs 5 lakh health insurance cover announced by the Centre. The manifesto was released in Shillong, Jowai and Tura simultaneously.

Apart from that, the party also promised to construct 50,000 livestock sheds, a seed capital assistance that will reach out to 4 lakh farmers, and by converting 40,000 hectares of land into organic farms.

After Gujarat, Meghalaya and Tripura are two states where the Congress headquarters sent in a team of research consultants that carried on manifesto consultations with the civil society, residents, journalists and people from all sectors. Ranajit Mukherjee, secretary of the Congress research team headed by MP Rajeev Gowda, and spent time in the two states, said that the promises in the manifesto are practical ones.

“The party president has asked us to not promise anything that we cannot deliver. If one looks at the manifesto you will find that the factual content is quite high,” said Mukherjee. He said that some of the recommendations, like the promise of 3 lakh jobs, or working women’s hostels are some of the research team’s inputs.
