Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the Congress on Saturday, and said national security and the defence sector have become a punching bag and funding source for the party.

"Sadly for the Congress, national security and defence sector is either a punching bag or a funding source. On one hand, their leaders call the army chief's name and mock surgical strikes, and on the other, they have looted the defence sector — from the jeep scam in the 1940s and 50s to Bofors scam in the 80s, AgustaWestland scam, submarine scam, etc." PM Modi said during a video interaction with party workers in Tamil Nadu.

He accused the previous Congress government of making money of the defence sector even at the cost of the forces' morale. "Thankfully those days are gone. We are proud of our forces and have faith in them," he said.

Booth level workers from Salem, Namakkal, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari and Nilgiris congratulated the prime minister over the Supreme Court's verdict on the Rafale aircraft deal.

Modi further accused the Congress of mere lip service towards farmers' issues and ignoring their well-being. Whenever the Congress is in power, the farmers suffer, he said, specifically mentioning the irrigation scam in Maharashtra. He also spoke of how a Congress leader in Punjab said the state government wasn't serious about the issues relating to sugarcane farmers.

"I'm sure you've read a newspaper report that says the Karnataka govt, where Congress is an integral partner, has given a farm loan waiver scheme worth Rs 44,000 crore. Only 800 farmers got mere benefits. Is this a joke? Is this how serious they are about the farmers? If there is one party which understands the agriculture issue and will always hear the farmers, it is BJP," he said.

PM Modi also reiterated the BJP's message of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas'. "BJP believes India can develop only when North, South, East and West all develop. The BJP government has given special attention to the needs of south India. No central government has done as much for Tamil Nadu as we have. From health to housing, from schemes to sanitation, lives of people are being improved across all sectors," he added.
