The Congress party will hold roadside demonstrations unless the state government gives financial aid to those farmers whose crops were damaged by untimely rains, a Congress leader said on Sunday.

'DON'T WAIT FOR CENTRAL GOVT FUNDS'
The demonstrations would take place unless the state government immediately gave Rs. 25,000 per acre in compensation to farmers with dry lands and Rs. 50,000 per acre to farmers with irrigated lands, state Congress head Manikrao Thakare told the media.

Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said that in case the state government fails to fulfill its obligations, the Congress would be forced to go out on the streets in protest. He said that the state government should play a proactive role and pay out compensation from its own treasury, without waiting for central government funds.

STATE-WIDE AGITATION
Thakare said that the demonstrations would be held in district towns all over the state on December 1, after which there would be state-wide Irasta roko Iagitations. If needed, a rally would be held outside the state assembly during the winter session, Thakare added.

Congress leaders met with Vidarbha MLAs in Nagpur to discuss various issues, including the condition of the rain-hit farmers and crop damage in all parts of the state.
