In Telangana which is preparing for early polls after the dissolution of the Assembly, the Congress is likely to field several candidates who were supposed to contest the Lok Sabha elections next year. These candidates include former Union ministers Sarvey Sathyanarayana and Balram Naik.

While the party does not have a dearth of candidates in the seats, sources in the state unit said the senior candidates have shown an interest to contest. Besides, the party also wants to field its most bankable candidates in what is considered a crucial election.

"There are many candidates in these constituencies, but now since senior leaders want to contest, everyone will make way for senior MP candidates. That is the best way to stop infighting within the party," said a state party leader.

Sathyanarayana and Naik, who were MPs from Mahbubabad and Malkajgiri respectively, could contest from Mahbubabad assembly and Secunderabad Cantonment respectively.

Parliamentarians who are likely to contest as MLAs are former Zahirabad MP Suresh Shetkar who might contest from the Narayankhed assembly, former Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar who may stand from the Karimnagar assembly, former Bhongir MP Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy who might contest from either Munugode or Bhongir assembly constituency, and former Mahabubnagar MP Mallu Ravi who might contest from the Jadcherla assembly. There is also speculation that former Adilabad TDP MP Ramesh Rathod might join the Congress and contest from Khanapur assembly.

Apart from that, there are some MP candidates from 2014 who are aspirants to MLA tickets. These include 2014 MP candidate from Chevella, Karthik Reddy Patlolla who might contest from Rajendra Nagar, Medak MP candidate P Sravan Kumar Reddy who may be fielded from Dubbak, and former BJP MP candidate from Mahbubnagar Nagam Janardhan Reddy, who joined the Congress recently and might contest from the Nagarkurnool assembly seat.

State party leaders feel that, if the need arises during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, some of the mentioned candidates can contest the Parliamentary elections as well, giving up their assembly seats. Most of the candidates, who are the winning horses, could make it easy for successive candidates in case the Congress comes to power in the state, party leaders feel. In case the Congress forms a government in the state, it will easier to win by-polls and with the party in power for a few months by then, they will also have work to show for.
