Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala too termed the attack a matter of serious security lapse on the part of the government and security forces.
The Congress on Tuesday trained its guns on the Modi government seeking answers why proper measures were not in place for the security of Amarnath pilgrims despite prior intelligence inputs on imminent threat. Leading the attack Congress Vice- President Rahul Gandhi termed the terror attack a "grave and unacceptable security lapse" and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accept its responsibility.
"This is a grave and unacceptable security lapse. The PM needs to accept responsibility and never allow it to happen again... India will never be intimidated by these terrorist cowards," he said in tweets.
Sharing a video of PM Modi in which he said demonetisation will give a deadly blow to terrorism, Congress said, "Contrary to promises made, terror attacks continued post November 8, 2016 under the PDP-BJP government. The government has a lot of answering to do."
Expressing shock, former Defence Minister, AK Antony asked the government to explain the lapse.
"It is shocking. It is sad. Why did it happen when security forces are everywhere? The government must explain," said Antony.

Citing a string of terror attacks in the Valley, Surjewala sought a time-bound inquiry into the matter.
Veteran Congress leader, Dr. Karan Singh, who hails from J&K said the State needs to be put under President's Rule as the BJP-PDP coalition government has not been able to combat terrorism in the region effectively.
"I see no step other than imposition of governor's rule in the prevailing situation, this is my individual opinion," said Dr Singh.
