Even as the Congress' fortunes seem to be on the turn in Rajasthan, several senior leaders —previously elected to the Parliament — now want to return to the home turf and duke it out for the MLA's gig.

These veteran leaders are now pressurising the party with their 'wish' to return and will likely be entertained as they yield clout in the area. To add to its misery, the party leadership is worried about the faces it will remain with when it needs to field candidates for the Lok Sabha elections slated next year around April-May as there is worry over the 'Modi factor'.

Raghu Sharma, who was elected MP from Ajmer in February this year, is seeking a ticket from Kekri constituency. A close aide of state Congress Committee chief Sachin Pilot, Sharma was made chairman of the Congress campaign committee, a key panel, and it is likely he will get the Kekri ticket.

Similarly, CP Joshi, who was union minister for Road Surface and Transport in the UPA-2 and Lalchand Kataria, former minister for rural development, also crave to be part of legislative members rather than parliamentarians. Kataria has expressed the desire to contest from Jhontwara or Amber while Joshi from Nathdwara.

Other candidates who have expressed desire to contest state elections include Mahadev Singh Khandela from Khandela, Girija Vyas from Udaipur City, Harish Choudhary from Baytu, Mahesh Joshi from Hawa Mahal or Sanganer and Raghuveer Meena from Udaipur Rural. "The veteran leaders are engaged in lobbying to get Assembly tickets. They see bright chances of Congress government coming to power which have been indicated in the media surveys and hence they want to contest the assembly elections only," said a senior party functionary.
