In an effort to revive dwindling fortunes of Congress, party's interim president Sonia Gandhi, his son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have decided to undertake foot marches in Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh respectively on Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.

This is part of the week-long celebrations for 150th birth anniversary announced by the party earlier.

The marches are aimed at reclaiming Mahatma Gandhi's legacy that the Congress of late has lost to the BJP and, in particular, Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has successfully launched Swachh India campaign for which he recently received Global Goalkeeper award from Bill and Melinda Gates.

Congress general secretary K C Venugopal on September 5 had put out a circular which said, during the marches the participants will wear caps with Mahatma Gandhi's picture on them and raise slogans exuding ideas expounded by the Father of the Nation.

Congress Kisan Cell president, Nana Patole said Sonia Gandhi will lead a foot march in Delhi and Priyanka in Utar Pradesh while Rahul Gandhi will lead the march in Sevagram, Wardha in Maharashtra.

"This is to consolidate Gandhi ji's ideology," said Patole.

Last year, as the party president, Rahul Gandhi had also chaired its working committee meeting in Wardha, which is also associated with Mahatma Gandhi, who had built an 'Ashram' in Sevagram. This will also mark the beginning of the Congress' election campaign in Maharashtra, which will go to polls with Haryana and bye polls on 11 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Elections in both states will be held in a single-phase and the results will be announced on October 24.
