The Congress on Tuesday reconstituted its Northeast Coordination Committee, making former PM Manmohan Singh, MP from Assam's Dispur constituency, its patron. Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will be its chairman.

The NECCC, announced by party general secretary Ashok Gehlot, will coordinate the activities of PCCs in Northeast to strengthen Congress party in the region, said a statement.

The NECCC will have all Congress chief ministers and former chief ministers of Northeastern states as advisers to the panel, while all PCC presidents, CLP leaders and Congress MPs and ex-MPs from all north eastern states will be its members. Currently, the party's lone chief minister is Mizoram CM Lanthanhawla; Mizoram goes to the polls this December.

Gehlot said the AICC general secretary and in-charge of Northeast states along with attached secretaries will be special invitees to the North East Coordination Congress Committee.

The announcement comes after BJP president Amit Shah took stock of preparations for 2019 Lok Sabha elections last week. With 25 seats in the fray, the BJP has started a concerted push in the region as it currently has only eight MPs from the region.
