Congress raised questions on the "hard, muscular, militaristic approach" of the government in handling the Kashmir issue a day after four policemen were killed in Sopore in an IED blast.

BJP was quick to react, blaming Jawaharlal Nehru's policy for the problem in the valley.

Former Home Minister P Chidambaram, in a series of nine tweets advocated that the way forward is to invite all stakeholders for talks.

"From time to time we are rudely reminded that there is an issue concerning the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The last reminder came on the night of 30-31 December 2017, when militants attacked the CRPF Training Centre at Lethpora in Pulwama district killing five CRPF personnel and injuring three," he tweeted.

Recalling that former IB chief Dineshwar Sharma was appointed as interlocutor for Kashmir in the middle of elections for Gujarat, which was perceived by stakeholders as a "pre-election gimmick" and said while he was appointed his "mandate was not clear".

Putting out a table with data of casualties of civilians, terrorists and security forces in last five years, the former Home Minister said, "It was claimed that the hard, muscular, militaristic approach will put an end to infiltration and militancy. Has it? If you are one of those who had thought that the hard, muscular, militaristic approach of the government should be given a chance, please look at the table once again. You may change your view."

He also lauded the efforts of former Prime Ministers --UPA's Manmohan Singh and NDA's Atal Bihari Vajpayee ifor their diligent efforts to find a solution to the Kashmir issue.

Another Congress leader Kapil Sibal said the government should explain their policy, "or else our security forces would die every day." "Modi's rhetoric has come apart. Soldiers and policemen martyred almost daily. Will Government explain? When will we stop losing lives,"he said in a tweet.

BJP leader Sambit Patra reacted sharply to Chidambaram's allegations and said it was the misgiving and misadventures of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, which is to be blamed for for the current situation in Kashmir.
