Congress party-workers on Sunday passed a resolution giving up their voting rights to party president Rahul Gandhi so that he can select the members of the Central Working Committee, the party's highest decision-making body. Sources close to Gandhi, however, said that it is likely that Gandhi calls for elections.

The decision was passed at the 84th Plenary of the party, where senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad rose to the dias to ask the delegates whether there should be an election for the CWC members, leading to a huge uproar and hooting from the party-workers. Within a few minutes, party workers raised their hands in a show of support to the idea of allowing Gandhi to pick members of the CWC at will.

The current CWC has been dissolved and in its place the steering committee was formed to spearhead the Plenary. Several AICC members said that the idea of an election was hardly ever going to be passed. "To add to it, one is not keen to be seen voting one leader ahead of the other," said an AICC member.

Party-workers also said that Gandhi might still ask for elections, because skipping it will be seen as a missed opportunity for the party to bring up a democratic set-up, even mounting the pressure on the BJP.

SINGH SLAMS ‘ILL-THOUGHT’ POLICIES

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh said the economy is in shambles because of the BJP’s “ill-thought” legislations and economic policies. “The BJP government has messed up the economy… the ill-thought and the ill-considered legislation with regard to demonetisation and the hastily put forward the legislation for GST have destroyed many jobs and have created problems for small and medium industry and the informal sector,” said Singh. He was addressing the 84th Plenary of the Congress party.
