Trying to forge unity among the opposition ranks, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is expected to call a wider meet of opposition parties next week to strategise against the Modi government.

Besides taking stock of the budget and its impact on the economy, the meeting will also try to chalk out a common strategy on several burning issues like rising unemployment, agrarian distress and slowdown in the economy.

The meeting, sources said, will also discuss about the simultaneous elections besides discussing if the impeachment motion could be brought against the chief justice of Supreme Court.

In a preparatory exercise for the wider meeting, a few opposition leaders – Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma from Congress, D Raja from CPI, rebel JDU leader Sharad Yadav and Farookh Abdullah from National Conference converged at NCP chief Sharad Pawar's New Delhi residence on Monday.

"Today's meeting was just an informal one. Based on economic survey, we generally talked about what could be there in the 2018-19 Budget. A wider opposition meet will be held at Sonia ji's residence next week. Ghulam Nabi Azad have been given the task to prepare for it and call the opposition leaders," NCP leader Praful Patel said.

Patel said there are several burning issues before the opposition, including simultaneous elections about which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken on many occasions and even President's address also mentioned it.

"This indicates that government is seriously thinking on these lines. But holding simultaneous elections is not an easy task. All political parties need to be brought on the same page for it. Besides, it will also need amending the constitution. We (opposition parties) are aware about it will take a decision regarding our response when the time comes," said Patel.
