Jamat-e-Ulema Hind, a leading Islamic seminary, has blamed the Congress for the rising incidents of mob lynching in the country.

This came from the national president of Jamat-e-Ulema-Hind, Molana Suhaib Qasmi in Guwahati on Friday.

"If a high-level investigation is conducted, it will be cleared," the top cleric said, adding that the Congress should be questioned for lynchings reported during its rule.

He said the Opposition to trying to create an atmosphere of fear by linking incidents of mob violence with the BJP and the RSS. "The country is progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Even Muslims countries have started respecting India," he said.

From Narasimha Rao to Manmohan Singh, Qasmi alleged, Muslims were harassed and thousands of members from the community died in communal violence. "Thousands became homeless. If there is a party that is against Muslims, it has to be the Congress."

Meanwhile, referring to mob lynchings and reports of people being forcefully made to chant 'Jai Shri Ram', senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid has said ''the people are living in fear today.''

The former union minister said, "Those residing in Delhi are not living in fear but those living on outskirts are living in fear because of the atmosphere prevailing in the country."

Khurshid`s comment came after it was reported that three madrasa students were allegedly thrashed with cricket bats and forced to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' during a clash between two groups in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh Law Commission had recently expressed concerns over rising incidents of lynchings in the country and suggested various measures to curb the menace. The law commission has recommended life imprisonment along with a hefty fine for those convicted in lynching cases.

''Mob lynching incidents are increasing in the country. The Commission did a study on it and submitted a report to the CM suggesting measures stop such incidents from happening and not only punishing the culprits,'' law panel chairman Justice AN Mittal said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently condemned mob lynchings in the name of cow protection," saying such incidents do not reflect well on a civilised society.
