Congress leaders detained for protesting against Demonetization

Several Congress leaders were arrested on Friday for protesting against demonetization drive on account of the second anniversary of the move.

Leaders including Ashok Gehlot, Sushmita Dev, Mukul Wasnik, Bhupender Hooda, Anand Sharma, Keshav Chand Yadav, Manish Chatrath, Nasib Singh were among several Congress workers and leaders who were detained while protesting outside the Reserve Bank of India office at the Parliament Street.

The party has intensified its protests against demonetization. The protests at the RBI headquarters were held by Congress party's frontal organisations including the Indian Youth Congress, the Mahila Congress, and the Seva Dal.
Congress workers across the country held protests on the streets in Mumbai, Chennai, Chandigarh, Patna, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, and Bengaluru.

On Thursday, former PM Manmohan Singh called it an "economic misadventure" that roiled the nation, and said that "the scars and wounds" of demonetization will only get worse with with time. Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that demonetization was "an unmitigated disaster" and said that the "tragedy" of demonetization led to the loss of the lives of over hundred and twenty Indians.

"It's shocking. I have never seen this kind of repression. We are a democracy. We should have been allowed to raise our voice against a wrong and reckless decision, which led to disaster. PM Modi is responsible for inflicting that pain on Indian people; there was loss of jobs, loss of lives, loss of business. Poor people were hurt the most," said senior Congress leader Anand Sharma.
