Congress president Rahul Gandhi told party leaders that the biggest challenge ahead will be the party's dipping vote-share across the country, and asked the leaders to work on a strategy in each state to undo that.

"The expansion of our vote base is one of our biggest tasks. In each constituency, we have to find people who have not voted for us and develop a strategy to reach out to them and win back their trust," Gandhi said while addressing the meeting of the extended CWC for the first time after he took over the party.

Gandhi said the Congress party has a responsibility of taking care of the country's present and the future. "Congress is the voice of India, it has the responsibility of its present and future as the BJP attacks institutions, Dalits, Tribals, backwards, minorities and the poor," Gandhi said. "I call upon the country's Congressmen and women to rise and fight for India's oppressed."

Speaking of the history of the CWC, Gandhi said that it has seen its evolution during the freedom struggle of India. "It's a forum where India expressed, debated, contested and consented ideas to take the nation from colonial rule to freedom. The CWC gave voice to every single Indian. It accommodated views from different perspectives and gave space to the weakest voices of India. Our collective challenge is to shape our current CWC to that level," he said.

Attempting to reach out to some party leaders, who were not quite happy with the reconstitution of the CWC, Gandhi said that the newly-constituted body will act as a bridge within the different sections within the party.

"The CWC will function as an institution comprising experience and energy, and as a bridge between the past, present and the future. We have tried to strike to a balance between the youth and experience in the CWC. The central idea behind the formation of this CWC is to make it inclusive, diverse, dynamic and representative," the Congress president said.

PLANNING FOR 2019

  • In the meeting, the party decided to focus on a ten point agenda ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, apart from forming regional alliances with parties to take on the ruling BJP.

  • Over 35 party leaders from across the country spoke during the meeting on a range of topics including J&K, women’s safety, the economic condition of the country.
