The Delhi Congress workers will organise a demonstration on Thursday to protest against the fuel price hike in the city, by forming a human chain from Mandi House to Parliament Street.

The chain will make people aware about the hike in prices of fuel due to the "unprecedented" increase in taxes by both the Narendra Modi-led Central government and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) governments, Congress' Delhi unit chief Ajay Maken said.

"The protest will be held in a peaceful manner, without disturbing the traffic," he said.

"The excise duty on petrol and diesel was increased by the Modi government as many as 11 times, while the Kejriwal government made amendments in the law to increase VAT twice, resulting in an all-time high in fuel prices in Delhi," Maken said.

He further said that it was saddening that countries such as Sri Lanka, which import fuel from India, sell it at lower prices as they do not impose "unnecessary taxes" on these products.

Maken claimed that petrol and diesel worth Rs 100 included Rs 51.78 and Rs 44.40 as taxes, respectively. The current prices of petrol and diesel in Delhi stand at Rs 70.52 and Rs 58.85 per litre, respectively.

In the last three days, Delhi Congress workers have staged protests at petrol pumps across the city and collected signatures of people against the fuel price hike.

Fuelling protests

The chain will make people aware about the hike in prices of fuel due to the “unprecedented” increase in taxes by both the Narendra Modi-led Central government and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) governments, said Congress’ Delhi unit chief.
He also said that it would be a peaceful protest and will not disturb traffic movement.
