Criticising the Gujarat government for 'harassing' IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, JD(U) leader Shivanand Tiwari said Congress may have fielded his wife against Narendra Modi to gain political advantage out of this issue.

"The way Sanjiv Bhatt has been harassed, that is not a good thing. I think to gain political advantage from this, his wife has been made a Congress candidate against Narendra Modi," he told reporters in Delhi.

He said soon after Bhatt started deposing in the Gujarat riots case, "some old case was opened against him. Prior to that, there was no information about such a case. His security was also withdrawn and all these suggest that he was being harassed."

Sanjeev Bhatt's wife Shweta Bhatt has been fielded by the Congress against the Gujarat chief minister from the Maninagar Assembly constituency.

Asked about his view on charges that Gujarat's development was a myth, Tiwari said, "I have read many times that in terms of human development index, Gujarat is way behind. There has been no increase in number of jobs. So if there is growth in the state, it is jobless growth."

On BJP's complaint to the Election Commission against the direct cash transfer scheme, the JD(U) leader said, "Announcing a scheme at the time of elections that can influence the voters, this is against the directions of the Election Commission.

"There is no doubt that through this scheme, Congress wants to influence voters. There are many states which have opposed it. The money can be used for other purposes also and I think the government has taken this decision without applying any thought," he said.
