Reminding the Akali-BJP government of Prime Minister's 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan', Congress' Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Tuesday demanded setting up of waste disposal plant in the city.

Currently, all the municipal and household waste is being dumped at Bagtanwala, which has turned into a huge mound, about 16 feet high, the local MP said. The garbage dump has been emitting foul smell and harmful gases which has made the life of residents in the surrounding areas very difficult, he said.

He said, one can well imagine the plight of those people who are residing around. The former Chief Minister, in a statement here, regretted that a city like Amritsar, which is the symbol of culture and heritage, should have such a poorly-maintained garbage dump proving to be a health hazard for its people.

Capt Amarinder reminded the state government of the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' saying, they should feel ashamed about the huge mound of garbage in the holy city. The garbage disposal needs a permanent solution and that can be possible only with setting up waste disposal and management plant, he said.

He hoped the government will take immediate note of the issue and take urgent measures to save people from inhaling the hazardous gases emitting out of the dump.
