Congress on Sunday alleged that the BJP was indulging in "gimmicks" to defame Robert Vadra and dared the ruling party to act against the son-in-law of Sonia Gandhi if he has flouted any law.

"If Robert Vadra has violated any laws, why does not the BJP take actions against him? (They are trying to) Just indulge in gimmicks (hawabazi) to defame him. It is the ill intention of BJP to defame the family of Sonia Gandhi and Indira Gandhi," senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh said. Vadra, whose land deals are being probed in BJP-rule Haryana and Rajasthan, on Sunday contended that he was being subjected to a "political witch-hunt" and used as a "political tool".

Alleging that there was a "sustained political attack" on him, 46-year-old Vadra claimed that BJP was using attacks on him as a "political tool whenever they need to divert public attention". The BJP meanwhile has described Vadra's assertion as "farcical" and said the party did not believe in politics of revenge, alleging that he used his connection with the Gandhi family to do business.

Vadra said a distinction should be made between him as an individual conducting business like anyone else and the politics of the family of his wife Priyanka Gandhi Vadra "without constantly attempting to link the two".
