Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi underwent a surgery at a Delhi hospital on Thursday to repair a shoulder injury she sustained during her roadshow in Varanasi and was shifted from the intensive care unit after making "steady progress" towards recovery. The Dr DS Rana, Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital told ANI: “She has been operated for a shoulder injury by a team from Mumbai & Orthopedic Consultant from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. She has been shifted out of the ICU and is making steady progress in the hospital.”

Gandhi was shifted to the Sir Gangaram Hospital last afternoon from the Army Research and Referral Hospital, where she was rushed soon after her arrival from Varanasi around midnight on Tuesday.

Sources said the operation last night to repair her left shoulder lasted nearly two hours. They said she is likely to remain at the hospital for a week and will need physiotherapy. Gandhi is admitted under the care of Dr Arup Basu and his team from Department of Pulmonology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.Despite persistent speculation, she has yet to hand over the party leadership to Rahul Gandhi, her 46-year-old son and the great grandson of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Sonia’s ill-health showed a rare bonhomie in our democracy’s fractious ways, as PM Narendra Modi prayed for her quick recovery and good health after she took ill towards the fag end of a march in Varanasi and spoke to Congress' chief ministerial candidate Sheila Dikshit to inquire about her party chief's condition. "Heard about Sonia ji's ill health during her Varanasi visit today. I pray for her quick recovery and good health," he had tweeted.

Later, Modi also spoke to Dikshit, who was accompanying Sonia and inquired about her health. Modi also offered to send a doctor and an aircraft to bring the Congress president back to Delhi.
