A day after Haryana government's shocker seeking personal and family data from students of private schools, the Congress accused the Manohar Lal Khattar government of resorting to illegal surveillance and racial and religious profiling and demanded immediate apology.
The BJP-ruled Haryana government's education department had handed a 100-point questionnaire form to students of Class 11 and 12 students in private schools seeking details about their Aadhaar number, religion, caste, bank account number. The questionnaire also sought to know if the parents of the students were engaged in an unclean occupation.
Hitting out at the Khattar government, Congress media in-charge and MLA from Haryana, Randeep Surjewala described it as a typical BJP/RSS mindset of spying on the people.
But it was the question on 'unclean' profession that drew the maximum ire of opposition parties. Many Opposition leaders asked what Khattar government meant by the word — is it about a worker, a landless labourer, a scavenger, a peon or a Dalit.
In a tweet, Congress spokesperson Surjewala said, "Khattar Govt does it again. Students labelled as 'untouchables' & their parents occupation as 'unclean'. Govt, taking a cue from NaMo App, issues a 100 pointer student admission form. Since when has Aadhaar become mandatory for school admission?"
In a subsequent tweet, he also said that the form was really meant for "surveillance of parents" that is "height of insanity".
He demanded the Khattar government to not only take back the questionnaire, but also to apologise to the people of Haryana for treating them in a shabby manner.
Yogendra Yadav of Swaraj Abhiyan asked if the Constitution of India allowed such questions to be asked from students. He also wondered whether new instruments of promoting untouchability are being created by the BJP government.
