The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday said that the Congress central leadership had become a liability for state leaders of that party, adding that GK Vasan's breaking away from the party was just the first consequence in a chain reaction.

Vasan, a Tamil Nadu Congress strongman, formally resigned from the party earlier in the day and announced plans to form a new organisation, hinting that the state needed a political alternative. "The Congress party is going through internal turmoil and their leaders in all states feel that the central leadership of the party has become a liability for them. I think that what you are seeing in Tamil Nadu today is only the first of a chain reaction that you are going to see in many other states," BJP spokesperson GVL Narsimha Rao told ANI.

"Congress leaders have stopped listening to the high command and it is a matter of time before the BJP would see a Congress-free India because there is no state where the Congress can even hope to attain an opposition status in the next five years. The party is in complete dire straits," he added. Last week, BS Gnanadesikan, a loyalist of Vasan, tendered his resignation as the Tamil Nadu Congress chief, accusing the Congress leadership in Delhi of failing to consult the state branch on important issues. Tamil Nadu will go to polls to form its fifteenth assembly in 2016.
