Prashant Kishor will take charge of the Congress campaign for Uttar Pradesh 2017 assembly elections, reports a leading English daily

Kishor had a meeting with Rahul Gandhi last week following which Congress took a decision to rope in him for the UP poll campaign. He will report directly to Rahul Gandhi

Kishor will reportedly ask for Priyanka Gandhi to be projected as the party's chief ministerial candidate. Kishor also wants a new team of professionals as he is unimpressed with the current one.

He will work from the party's war room at Gudwara Rakabganj Road in Delhi. His job will be to provide key inputs in candidate selection, apart from election strategy, rallies, publicity campaign, etc. He has asked for complete liberty to reshape the party's campaign without any meddling from Congress state and central leaders.

Kishor has denied to comment about his appointment.

Rahul Gandhi has reportedly asked the general secretary and office-bearers of UP Congress to report to Kishor and asked Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to identify a new general secretary in-charge for UP.

Congress has called for a meeting of its 35 leaders from Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday over Kishor's mandate for the polls.

However many leaders are not aware about Kishor's appointment. Congress MLA Rita Bahuguna Joshi and spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that they have been intimated about the meeting but have not been informed about Kishor heading the state's poll campaign. Surjewala said "It is for the topmost leadership to decide. But we have in the past received inputs from him (Kishor) about media strategy."

Kishor was one of the key backroom players for Narendra Modi when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, and also when he was running as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. Kishor heads Indian Political Action Committee (IPAC), led by a young team of technocrats.   He was also the poll strategist was the main force behind Kumar's campaign strategy in Bihar.

Prashant Kishor, 37, who hails from Buxar in Bihar, came out to support Nitish earlier in May this year, calling him one of the most credible politicians who had improved Bihar on many fronts. Kishor replaced the 'Chai pe Charcha' he coined for Modi with 'Parcha (pamphlet) pe charcha' for Nitish and the comic series 'Bal-Narendra' was replaced with 'Munna se Nitish'.

He is also working for Punjab Congress in the forthcoming state elections to be held in early 2017.
