The Congress accused the Narendra Modi government and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday for not taking timely action and playing with the emotions of the families of the 39 Indians who died in Iraq, deliberately misleading them by continuously feeding false information about of their safety in Iraq.

Rebutting BJP allegations that the Congress was playing politics on the issue by not allowing discussion in Parliament, senior Congress MP Ambika Soni charged the BJP government for not even keeping the tradition of two minutes silence and trying to brush government's incompetency under the carpet.

"How can the foreign minister break the news on Parliament and let the families learn about the death of their kin on television? Why did not she speak to them first? This is appalling," said Soni.

The Congress accused Swaraj for finally breaking the news as the Martyr's Association of Iraq was about to announce it in on Tuesday.

The party demanded one time grant of Rs one crore to the families of each deceased who were the sole earning member and had gone to the dreaded area to earn a living.

"We demand Sushmaji to go to Punjab and publicly apologise to the families for misleading them," said Congress media in-charge Randeep Surjewala.

Pratap Singh Bajwa, a Congress MP from Punjab who was blocked on Twitter by Swaraj for seeking details of the case, said government was misleading the families for last four years, and added that the government just wanted to send out a message that they put in efforts to trace the missing people.

"We had an eye witness Harjit Masih, he said all of them were killed but government did not believe him."

Saying Swaraj's act of blocking him on Twitter was unbecoming of a senior politician like her, he said that he now stands vindicated.
