While the Opposition Congress attempted to link hacking of its Vice-President Rahul Gandhi’s official Twitter account to digital insecurity in the country, which is on the verge of going cashless, cyber security experts believe that hacking should not come as a surprise, citing similar attempts on the accounts of even Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, its co-founder Evan Williams, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEP Sundar Pichai.

The issue has, however, led to a war of words between the Opposition Congress and the ruling BJP, with the former questioning digital safety in India and linking it to the PM’s drive to make the country cashless. The Congress also deactivated 200 Twitter accounts of its leaders. Party sources said official email IDs of many of its leaders too have been hacked, and the emails would not be operated until the issue is sorted out.

Hitting back, BJP leader Ram Madhav said the Congress leaders’ showed regressive attitude by raising doubts on cyber security and Digital India and by questioning safety of bank accounts of ordinary people. The Delhi Police have registered an FIR on the basis of a complaint filed by Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala. Minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan blamed the Congress VP for the security breach.

Even though the Congress stayed away from raising the issue in Parliament, senior leader Digvijaya Singh said he suspected the role of “followers of the government” behind hacking of Twitter accounts of the party and its vice president. Twitter said there was no security breach at their end. They believed that the accounts may have been compromised through breach of e-mail linked to Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account.
