They might be at loggerheads in national politics, but BJP and Congress actually came together to form an alliance for the election to the posts of Gondia Zilla Parishad president and vie president. The BJP supported Congress nominee Seema Madavi for president, while Congress-backed BJP candidate Hamit Akbar Ali won the vice-president’s post.

This left NCP fuming who won 20 seats but were unable to secure the posts because BJP won 17 and Congress 16.

However, this  alliance has left the Congress high command fuming and Congress president Rahul Gandhi has reportedly sought an explanation. Even the party’s Maharashtra leaders appeared to be in the dark, with Ashok Chavan saying he had no clue about the tie up.

The Indian Express reported that party’s local legislator Gopaldas Aggarwal could face disciplinary action. Two senior party leaders Harshwardhan Sapkal and Vijay Wadettiwar, have been asked to submit a report.

Chavan was quoted saying: “I’ve sought a report on the issue. The alliance (with the BJP) is against the party’s principles, and we do not support it.”
